Estìa

Estìa in Greek mythology is the goddess of hospitality. She encompasses the hearth, home, and family. Imagine the warm, crackling fire at the center of every home – that’s her doing! For me, she represents order in a home, how everything has a place and function. This philosophy is something I discovered when I started cooking for myself. As you start building your kitchen ecosystem you realize that everything has to work together. What you are making today is going to depend on what ingredients you have left from yesterday’s cooking. This philosophy is grounded in developing a sense in the kitchen, not just following a recipe. This is what Estìa means.

Cook, Learn, Understand!

Who am I

Hey there, my name is Alex. I am neither a chef nor am I studying to become one. I’m just a random math student who likes to cook (and to eat :). Estia is a personal project I started, in an attempt to share what my experience has taught me in the kitchen during my time in college.

Seeing many of my friends struggle to build and understand their kitchen ecosystem (shoutout to my roommate), I realized this tool could help people become independent, efficient, and flexible in the kitchen–and smart grocery shoppers. Also, when people buy a lot of pre-made foods and takeout, the packaging and production process can be very unsustainable. I am hoping that if people cook at home more (without using ingredients sourced in unsustainable ways), it will help our lifestyle become more sustainable too.

To be honest, sharing this information effectively is a lot harder than I thought. Nevertheless, I will try my best to teach you how cooking became a relaxing—almost meditative—and very efficient activity for me. I hope my platform helps you enjoy the process of cooking so that it doesn’t feel like a chore, but an enjoyable activity.

Happy cooking!
